Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Acupuncture? 

Yes, UnitedHealthcare covers acupuncture. Acupuncture may be categorized as “complementary and alternative medicine” or “rehabilitation therapy” by your insurance plan. Coverage for the procedure may require you to purchase a separate rider, or have a higher deductible.

Coverage limitations for acupuncture vary from state to state, so make sure to check with your provider to determine whether acupuncture will be covered for you. 

Please be weary of receiving acupuncture treatment if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, or take blood thinners.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Chiropractic Treatment?

Some UnitedHealthcare plans, including some employer-sponsored plans, cover chiropractic treatment. A new benefit introduced in past years covers three chiropractic visits for enrolled members in Connecticut, Florida, George, New York, North Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Some UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans also cover chiropractic treatment. 

In most cases the individual must have clinical symptoms of a condition that may be improved or resolved by standard chiropractic therapy. For full coverage, a treatment plan must be clearly documented, the chiropractic procedures must be clearly related to the patient’s condition, and the chiropractic care must be performed by a licensed chiropractor.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Allergy Testing?

Yes, UnitedHealthcare covers allergy testing, including (but not limited to) skin testing, sputum examinations, and antigen testing. Allergy testing must be part of an established allergy testing and treatment plan. 

Allergy testing and desensitization injections can be a great way to determine allergies and prevent bad reactions if determined to be medically necessary by the Primary Care Physician. Allergy testing and immunotherapy are covered if you are referred by your physician.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Abortions?

Elective abortions and selective fetal reductions are covered as part of the Women’s Health Care Law. Women may self-refer to any UnitedHealthcare contracted women’s health care provider for professional services; however, they are not covered for the member’s dependent children. With recent lawmaking decisions, it is best to contact your insurance provider to see if abortion coverage is provided.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Gender Reassignment Surgery?

UnitedHealthcare covers gender reassignment surgery if eligibility qualifications for surgery are met. These criteria include persistent, documented gender dysphoria and the capacity to make a fully informed decision and consent for treatment. 

In addition, the patient must be the age of majority in the country in which they are having the surgery, and must complete 12 months of successful continuous full-time real-life experience in their desired gender. Other qualifications also apply.  

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Birth Control?

UnitedHealthcare covers birth control if the birth control product appears on a list approved by UnitedHealthcare. You must cover other products out-of-pocket.

UnitedHealthcare includes coverage for birth control, including oral contraceptives, intrauterine devices, injections, and emergency contraception. Coverage may depend on the type of plan you are enrolled in. 

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Breast Reduction Surgery?

UnitedHealthcare covers breast reduction surgery when it is reconstructive and determined to be medically necessary. If it is for cosmetic purposes, you must pay out-of-pocket. A number of other criteria must be met.

Several criteria must be met, including a diagnosis of macromastia, the diagnosis of two or more symptoms of hypertrophy (backache, posture change, hygiene problems, or other), and the failure to relieve symptoms using nonsurgical treatment (including exercise, hot/cold treatment, and an appropriate support bra) for at least six weeks. Patients must also be at least 18-years-old  or must have reached breast maturity. 

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Infertility Treatments?

UnitedHealthcare covers ovulation induction, insemination procedures, and assisted reproductive technologies. Procedures to diagnose infertility and procedures to correct a physical condition that is the underlying cause of infertility is also covered. To be eligible for coverage, a number of criteria must be met. 

Diagnostic tests, including tests to rule out endocrine causes of infertility and semen analysis, among other tests, must be performed to determine that infertility treatments are necessary. Treatments may include infertility drugs and operative procedures, but coverage frequently excludes artificial means of conception, such as artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF). 

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover STD Testing?

Testing for some sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, is covered by UnitedHealthcare as part of the provider’s preventative care services coverage. However, coverage may depend on age, gender, and sexual history. 

This may include testing as part of a pregnancy screening, testing for individuals who are deemed high-risk, testing for victims of sexual assault, or routine testing for homosexual men.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Mental Health Services?

UnitedHealthcare’s coverage extends to a number of medications to treat mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. UnitedHealthcare also has coverage for inpatient and outpatient mental health services, provided that certain criteria are met. 

It is important to note that evidence-based treatment, like therapy and psychoanalysis, is covered, but services rendered outside of a therapy setting, such as systematic desensitization or exposure therapy for a specific phobia, are typically not covered.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Therapy?

Yes, some UnitedHealthcare plans cover therapy, including psychiatric care and many forms of counseling. Some UnitedHealthcare enrollees may also have access to Sanvello, which is an emotional support app. 

Therefore, traditional therapy, like in-office cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis,or talk therapy will most likely be covered, but out-of-office therapy may not be. It’s best to check with your insurer to see what is and is not covered.

UnitedHealthcare offers dental insurance, which must be purchased separately from your health insurance plan.  These plans can include preventive packages, which cover procedures such as routine cleanings, and more comprehensive packages that cover minor and major services and procedures, like fillings and dental surgeries. These dental plans must be purchased separately from traditional medical coverage.

As of this year, UnitedHealthcare covers:

  • Periodontal maintenance 
  • Periodontal scaling/root planing 
  • Periodontal and oral evaluations 
  • Palliative treatments 
  • Fluoride and sealants 
  • Extensive removal of plaque and tartar buildup (full mouth debridement)

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Braces?

UnitedHealthcare’s vision plan covers up to 35% of LASIK procedures at more than 900 approved locations. The vision plan, like the dental plan, must be purchased separately. 

Typically, no third party insurers or governmental insurers cover the surgery, but they can offer a discount or rebate.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Blood Pressure Monitors?

UnitedHealthcare does not cover diagnostic or monitoring equipment purchased for home use, including blood pressure monitors, unless the device has been determined necessary by a physician to treat an injury or illness.

UnitedHealthcare covers Cialis for those with a medical diagnosis of erectile dysfunction and whose erectile dysfunction has not responded to generic Cialis. A patient must have a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction or benign prostatic hyperplasia, among other criteria, in order for coverage to apply. 

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Chantix?

UnitedHealthcare covers Chantix, but prior authorization by a healthcare professional is required. Chantix is a smoking cessation treatment that helps people addicted to nicotine curb their cravings and kick the bad habit.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover the Shingles Vaccine?

UnitedHealthcare covers Shingrix for adults over the age of 50. Shingrix is a vaccine made of a shingles virus component. It’s given in two doses, with 2-6 months between doses. Because you have to repeat treatment, it is great that the cost is covered.
