About Medicare Health Plans

Health plans can be found on Medicare’s official website. Plans are offered through private health insurance companies that enter into a contract with Medicare to provide Part A and Part B benefits to those eligible for Medicare.

Medicare.gov website’s health plans will include Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), Medicare Cost Plans, Demonstration/Pilot Programs, and Medicare Advantage Plans. These programs are particular types of Medicare health plans offered by public or private entities. They will provide Part D and other benefits in addition to Part A and Part B benefits.

How Medicare works with other insurance

Medicare.gov’s website explains how Medicare works with other insurance plans. If a person has Medicare or additional health insurance coverage, each of these types of coverage is known as a “payer.” When there is more than one payer, “coordination of benefits” rules will decide which one will pay first. A “primary payer” will pay what’s owed on the bills first and then will send the rest to a “secondary payer” to complete payment. In some cases, there may also be a third payer.

Paying “first” means the whole bill is paid up to the limits of the coverage. However, it does not always mean the primary payer pays first on time. For example, if an insurance company does not pay a claim promptly (usually within 120 days), a doctor or other healthcare provider may bill Medicare. Medicare could make a conditional payment to pay a bill and then recover any payments a primary payer should have made.
